Charles Joseph Bonaparte (1851-1821) was the U.S. Secretary of the Navy under President Theodore Roosevelt. Bonaparte was also the grandson of Jerome Bonaparte, who was Napoleon Bonaparte’s youngest brother. America’s connection with the Bonaparte family started in 1803 when Jerome Bonaparte (who was serving in the French Navy) married Baltimore heiress Betsy Patterson. An irate Napoleon had his brother’s marriage annulled in 1815, essentially abandoning a very pregnant Betsy in London. In a strange coincident, Betsy’s widowed sister-in-law married the Duke of Wellington’s older brother.
