Napoléon, Prince Imperial (1856-1879) was the only child of Emperor Napoleon III and Eugénie de Montijo.  Due to his parent’s friendship with Queen Victoria, young Napoléon grew up in Britain after his father was overthrown in 1870.  He was intended to marry Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice, but he was killed in 1879 while serving in the British Army in the Anglo-Zulu War.  The Prince Imperial’s death ended all prospects of a Napoleonic regime in France and led the Viscount Wolseley to describe him as “a plucky young man, and he died a soldier’s death.  What on earth could he have done better?”
